Bronx County Supreme Court - Criminal Division
This case is only one case in a city where dog fighting has become mainstream for many neighborhoods and yet the activity is portrayed as an anomaly as evidenced by the lack of cases going in front of the courts which is grossly disproportionate.
Many of you who have joined our campaign are in rescue in NYC and know that our shelters are bulging at the seams with pit bulls and other large breed dogs who have been discarded after irresponsible breeding and many for this purpose. They are difficult to place because of the stigma attached to them and yet the City has done nothing to enforce its own laws which include mandatory spay and neuter in all Government Sponsored Housing Projects along with not charging spectators participating and betting at these events. Given how mainstream dog fighting is in many NYC communities the arrests are grossly disproportionate. Let's not commit the crime of indifference and ignore a crime that has deep roots to many other crimes: child abuse, drugs, firearms, gambling, violence and last but not least animal cruelty. If we allow crimes of this nature to be swept under the carpet on the premise "it is not my problem" we will all soon be faced with all of the above effecting our lives and the lives of those we love and care about in some way if we haven't already. All we need is to pack the court!
